Patches of Destruxion

Hello everyone! Humans are pattern-seeking mammals, and one of the good things about that is that quilt inspiration is everywhere. And one of the good things about smartphones is every time you see something, you can just take a picture.  The downside is that means I have vastly more ideas than I could ever have time to make. But I thought if I put a bunch of the pics into a blog post, I would have somewhere to refer to when inspiration was lacking. And maybe some of you will find them inspiring too. I took this pic today. It is a metal café table. Wouldn't it make a great EPP pattern? I can see two ways to piece it - Equilateral triangles divided inro thirds, or hexies pieced from 6 of the little triangles arranged in three pairs. The circle effect could be achieved with fussy cutting or, more likely, appliqué. This is not the greatest pic, sorry. It is a wooden screen in a restaurant. Hello everyone! My July Tula Palooza block is finished. For this month we were using Tula Pink's Holidays with our Homies patten, which is a free pattern available here . For me, the interest in the pattern lay in the little starts between blocks, that's what makes it more than just a Sawtooth star quilt. Also, I felt if I just did a star, it would feel too similar to the wonky star block we did in January . So I sketched out a way to include the sashing and quarter the little corner stars. Then on to the fabric pull. I started with the deer in the middle, mostly because it isthe only one of my large 'hero' prints I haven't used so far. It's from an out of print collection called Moonshine. As with previous months, my fabric choices are based more around colour than the design on the fabric. Hello everyone! The June theme for this sewalong was travel. I love travelling and exploring new places, even though I don't get to as often as I would like. My enthusiasm for this project returned, and I made 7 blocks. But before I go into them in detail, I made a bonus block for Animal Month ( May ). This one is made entirely of diamonds I had cut out and rejected in previous months. Mainly because I couldn't work out what to pair with them. I realised they paired nicely with each other, and so this block was born! Don't throw away your rejects and scraps! You never know when they will come together and make something that works. Several people commented it looks like fidget spinners. That wasn't my intention, but I can totally see it. So, on to June proper. First up we were doing whole motifs in the inner diamonds. Hello everyone! This is a follow on to my post on making mistakes here . In that post, I wrote about stitching a block upside down my Fussy Cutting Forest quilt (more about this quilt here , here and here ) and having to unpick twice. Guess what, I made the same mistake with a different block! But I came up with a much quicker fix, so I thought I should write about it, if only to help me remember for next time. I was joining a unit on to the main quilt. Before joining, the units look like a hexie flower with brown triangles on each point and a large green hexie either side. I work holding the right sides of the pieces together, meaning I am looking at the backs most of the time. So after stitching the bicycle unit on, I flipped it over for a quick check before grabbing the next unit. And... it's upside down. You can tell by comparing the boat hexie to the compass and house hexies in the surrounding units. I quickly decided I couldn't just leave it wrong (it is al
