Snowflake quilt

Having made a start on sorting my scraps the other day, I have been itching to get on with my snowflake quilt, to use all the 2.5 inch squares I have been cutting.

I knew I already had quite a lot of 9 patch blocks made up, so I pulled my white / low volume prints from my stash to make some of the snowflake blocks.





I originally started this quilt to practise my sewing machine skills. They have definitely improved a lot and I am much quicker than I used to be, especially since I got my head around chain piecing. Having a newer, faster machine also makes a real difference. I whipped up 10 blocks in a couple of hours.



I decided to lay them out with my other blocks to see how many I had, and work out what to make next.



As you can see, I already have enough to finish it up with 6x4 blocks. And I only need the snowflake blocks and 1 more 9 nine patch to make it twice that size. These are only 6 inch blocks, so neither option would be particularly big and I still have a ton more scraps I can use, so I could go bigger if I wanted too. I am still undecided.

As I went along I stitched an extra line on each seam so when I cut the excess on the snowflake blocks, I was left with a bunch of HSTs (half square triangles) already sewn together. I can use these for an accompanying cushion cover or a doll's quilt or something. They are about 1 inch square.



So that's where I am with that. I have been in a bit of a quilting lull during this pandemic, so it feels good to be starting to get my quilting mojo back. And to be making progress on a long term WIP (work in progress).

Finished! Sunflower Field Mini Quilt

Hello Everybody! I actually finished a quilt! Only a miniature quilt. But it's finished, nonetheless. This is Sunflower Field. This is my entry into the Near To Nature mini quilt challenge organised by The Little House of Patchwork  in aid of the RSPB . For the challenge we were all sent a pin badge of a British bird or countryside animal, and we had to make a mini quilt inspired by and including the pin. I was sent this little greenfinch. A bit of Googling and image searching revealed greenfinches to be fond of eating sunflower seeds. I had also seen som lovely EPP sunflowers by Anne at Three Goobers . I did some sketches and decided to do a little field with sunflowers in three different sizes to create an illusion of depth. The maximum size for the challenge was 9x12 inches, so it was clear from the outset I was going to need some very small sunflowers indeed. Fussy cutting sewalong May roundup

Hello everyone! After all my enthusiasm in April, I seemed to have much less energy for this sewalong in May. I am not sure why. The theme of animals is a nice, concrete one to work with and I had been looking forward to it. However, even with the downturn in mood I still made 5 blocks in a 4-week month. Week one was whole animal motifs. This was an easy start - I had these fabrics picked out in my head as soon as the prompt details were up. The pairing of cats and milk appealed to my sense of humour. Next up is this Mickey Mouse block. I basically made this one because I had noticed the fabric would work well and I wanted an excuse to make it. And fictional animals were explicitly allowed in the prompt details. Week 2 was mystery sections from the top half of an animal. I really struggled with this one. I played around with my templates on lots of fabrics to find one that would even work. The 3rd Genevieve Awards: The Festival of Quilts 2023

 Hello everybody! The Festival of Quilts 2023 has been and gone and it has been one hell of an event! I spent two whole days there, I exhibited myself for the first time this year, I attended two workshops and a talk and I took a grand total of 1619 photos, which I have had to dump onto my laptop because my SD card and my phone storage have finally told me enough is enough with my photo habits and I near to clear some space. Me on the train on the way to the second day of the FOQ. So on to this year's Genevieve Awards! The Genevieve Awards are awards I give to the quilts on display at the Festival of Quilts. The only prize for them is the knowledge that I like your quilt. I make up the categories, I decide which quilts go in to the categories, I decide who wins.
