Focus Cutting Sewalong December block

 Hello everybody!

As I mentioned previously, I am very behind with this sewalong. I still haven't made the May-November blocks. But I was really feeling like some Christmassy sewing, and I thought it would be nice to do one block this year in the right month.

Unsurprisingly, the theme for December is Christmas/Winter. And I picked identifiable motifs again from the weekly prompts. I decided to cut into this licensed Mickey Mouse fabric I was given as a gift last Christmas.


I used one of each character for the four houses. I auditioned two possibilities for the outer squares - a stripy fabric that was part of the same bundle as the characters, and an icy snowflake fabric. Sorry for the poor photo quality, but that's the deal with the lighting when sewing on December evenings.




My husband preferred the jolly stripy fabric, but I thought that would look a little too busy. The snowflake fabric felt more wintry to me, and I thought the blue tint in it would help the block to fit better with the other ones I've made, so I chose that. And here is the finished block! Just for fun, I have also posed it on my Christmas tree.




I am intending to join in with next year's half-hexie blocks weekly, as I am very much feeling the need to be back in the community next year, with the last year or two being so disrupted on that front. That will mean I have 4 quilts from this sew-along among my WIPs (works in progress). I really need to get round to making some more progress on, or actually finishing, the other ones.

Finished! Sunflower Field Mini Quilt

Hello Everybody! I actually finished a quilt! Only a miniature quilt. But it's finished, nonetheless. This is Sunflower Field. This is my entry into the Near To Nature mini quilt challenge organised by The Little House of Patchwork  in aid of the RSPB . For the challenge we were all sent a pin badge of a British bird or countryside animal, and we had to make a mini quilt inspired by and including the pin. I was sent this little greenfinch. A bit of Googling and image searching revealed greenfinches to be fond of eating sunflower seeds. I had also seen som lovely EPP sunflowers by Anne at Three Goobers . I did some sketches and decided to do a little field with sunflowers in three different sizes to create an illusion of depth. The maximum size for the challenge was 9x12 inches, so it was clear from the outset I was going to need some very small sunflowers indeed. The 3rd Genevieve Awards: The Festival of Quilts 2023

 Hello everybody! The Festival of Quilts 2023 has been and gone and it has been one hell of an event! I spent two whole days there, I exhibited myself for the first time this year, I attended two workshops and a talk and I took a grand total of 1619 photos, which I have had to dump onto my laptop because my SD card and my phone storage have finally told me enough is enough with my photo habits and I near to clear some space. Me on the train on the way to the second day of the FOQ. So on to this year's Genevieve Awards! The Genevieve Awards are awards I give to the quilts on display at the Festival of Quilts. The only prize for them is the knowledge that I like your quilt. I make up the categories, I decide which quilts go in to the categories, I decide who wins. Finished Quilt: Hats Off To You

 Hello everybody! This is a story of a quilt that I have not only completely finished, but am exhibiting at the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham! This story starts on 25 March, when my Maths Professor Dad posted an article on FB about some as yet unpublished research into the discovery of a new shape given the name of 'einstein hat'. The is the first shape discovered by mathematicians that can aperiodically tile a plane all by itself. It was instantly obvious to me from the picture in the link that this could be made as an English Paper Piecing quilt. In particular, the small subdivisions of the shape marked out are kites - the exact same shape I was using for last year's #focuscuttingsewalong - and I still have a ton of the papers left over.
