Before the blog: Lego miniquilt for Mum

At the weekend, we took our kids on a day trip to Legoland Windsor, alongside my mother. This reminded me of a miniquilt I made for my Mum in 2017, so I thought this was a good time to share the story of it.

In 2017, when I had gone back to work after the birth of my second child, my Mum travelled through from Essex to Oxfordshire one day a week to look after the two boys while I went to work. She did this for several months, basically until I went off on maternity leave again with my third (born November of that year). My Mum is an unashamed Adult Fan Of Lego and one of her favourite things to do with my children was (and still is) build Duplo and Lego with them. So when I decided to make a miniquilt for her birthday that year, Lego was an obvious choice of subject matter.

I did some playing around in Pinterest for inspiration but ultimately decided my own design was definitely the way to go.

First I built a small Duplo house for reference.

Then I sketched it out to work out the dimensions. Annoyingly, I now cannot find the sketch to photograph it.

I chose to make it with all solids so it would look like the bricks. I used black for the background, mostly because I already had a decent amount of that fabric, but also to make the bright colours pop. Here is my fabric pull.

It took a couple of attempts to get the dimensions right on the window. This first attempt was half an inch too small.

For the border, I repeated the four colours I had used to do the bricks, and used black cornerstones.

I decided to keep the quilting to very simple outlines, to maintain the plastic texture of the bricks. I bound it in black.

And here's the finished piece! My Mum likes it, and she keeps it in the conservatory of her house, which is one of the places she keeps her Lego.

Here is my Mum with my kids enjoying Legoland! It was a fun day despite the February weather.
