November 2022 #focuscuttingsewalong roundup

Hello everybody! Another month down in the Focus Cutting Sewalong. For November, we had a one-week freestyle week for Remembrance Sunday, and the theme for the remaining three weeks of the month was Lines. It's not been my most productive month, but I am still keeping up with the sewalong. I made 1 block for Remembrance Day (not in the first picture, because I have mislaid the block), and 6 blocks on the Lines theme. As I said, Week 45, the first week of November, was a freestyle special for Remembrance Day. Here is my block. I struggled to work out what to do for this week, as I don't have any poppy fabrics, and I thought my gravestones fabric would be way too morbid. I also don't like patriotic-type fabrics for remembrance, as I feel we should be remembering all the war dead, whatever flag they fought under. This block is meant to represent a sunset. It's inspired by the following lines from the poem 'For the Fallen' by Laurence Binyon. They shall not grow ol...

October 2022 #focuscuttingsewalong roundup

Hello everybody! This month on the sewalong our theme has been the UN International Day of Cotton. The majority of people doing patchwork work with cottons so the idea of this theme was to keep us mindful of where our fabric comes from and the processes that go into bringing it to us. I have had a very productive month, and I made 13 blocks all together. There's only 12 in this picture, because I have annoyingly misplaced one block, so I can't put it in the group pics, but you will see it individually later on. For week 39 the prompt was our Earliest cottons. The idea was to use fabrics from early projects or that we had had for a long time. I found this week really enjoyable, as I love using fabrics to make connections between people and my own projects. I made 3 blocks. First up, this circle of bears. This first one uses an old fabric that used to belong to my mother. She bought it in about 1984-5 when we were living in California. She used it in several quilts when we were c...

Hello everybody! It's been a strange month in the sewalong. The theme was Books, which I was really looking forward to, however this was interrupted for two weeks while we paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth II. I found this second theme very difficult in terms of creating blocks, as I had already used up my more obvious royal fabrics during the Platinum Jubilee . And it meant we didn't get to do all the Books stuff I wanted to do. Nevertheless, I made 3 blocks on the theme of Books, and 3 on the theme of Queen Elizabeth II. Week 35 was Identifiable Motifs and Books. I made two blocks. The first one is, very obviously, Winnie the Pooh. We have just finished reading this very battered copy of Winnie the Pooh to my daughter.  I grew up with the two AA Milne poetry collections, When we were Very Young, and Now We Are Six. As well as an audio book version of the original Disney cartoons of Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree and Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day. So these books wer...

And more Halloween La Pass

Image
Hello everybody! Seeing as I am feeling re-enthused about my Halloween La Passacaglia project, I have been making steady progress on it. I have been looking at getting the bits I have joined together. Last time, I managed to add a smaller rosette to one of the large purple rosette.  I used this to be able to join on one of my odd-shaped side bits. I then added in some grey path and attached two more rosettes to the side of the large purple one. I have expanded this rosette: And then used it to join my two larger sections together! It's now too big to be able to photograph straight in my kitchen or lounge. Having so much of it joined on to each other like this is really motivating to me, it very much gives me a sense of everything coming together.  I have also been expanding the quilt other places. The second main orange rosette, which will sit in the lower right quadrant of the quilt, has finally had some more white bits added to it. This rosette, and the ones surroundi...
