Hello!

Welcome to Patches of Destruxion.

I have decided to keep this blog to make a record of my sewing projects. I mostly do patchwork and embroidery. I am active on IG under the name @eveofdestruxion, and while I love the IG crafting community, I want a place for keeping more coherent records, telling stories about the pieces I create and posting different captions for multiple images. It would also be nice to write the stories of some things I created many years ago.

I am doing this mainly for myself. I hope to post fairly regularly - about once a week - but I make no guarantees of doing so.

So, who am I? I am Genevieve, I am a former educational publishing professional, now embracing full-time parenthood to my little ones, currently aged 4, 2 and 1. I have been sewing and crafting since I was a small child. I slowed down considerably in my 20s but decided to start properly dedicating time and space to my crafting about half way through my second maternity leave. I am mostly taught by my awesomely talented and productive mum, Theresa.

I sometimes follow patterns and make kits, especially for cross stitch and embroidery, but mostly I just sketch and sew. I have many more ideas and plans than I have actual finished projects.

I am not a fast maker.  My crafting time is precious to me, and I generally prefer to stitch whatever has gripped me in the moment, rather than insisting to myself I have to finish one thing before I can start another. Also, I prefer to work by hand. I am slightly scared of my sewing machine and tend to avoid using it if I don't have to. Hoping to conquer that fear soon!

So here is my blog!  So you have something pretty to look at, here is a recent finish - three little autumn woodland animals from a kit by Susan Penny from Cross Stitcher magazine.


I enjoyed stitching these, they took longer than I expected, but I liked the way they used different weights of stitching for the backgrounds to help the illusion of depth.

The 4th Genevieve Awards: Festival of Quilts 2024

 Hello everybody! There has been another Festival of Quilts! And I exhibited again - with one solo quilt, and one block in a group quilt. I was only able to go for one day this year, but in that day I managed to pack in watching the 'Wearable Quilt Creations' catwalk, and an embroidery workshop, as well as getting around all the quilts and some of the vendors.  Again, I managed to max out the storage on my phone and its SD card with photographs as there were just so many beautiful quilts to see. Fussy cutting sewalong May roundup

Hello everyone! After all my enthusiasm in April, I seemed to have much less energy for this sewalong in May. I am not sure why. The theme of animals is a nice, concrete one to work with and I had been looking forward to it. However, even with the downturn in mood I still made 5 blocks in a 4-week month. Week one was whole animal motifs. This was an easy start - I had these fabrics picked out in my head as soon as the prompt details were up. The pairing of cats and milk appealed to my sense of humour. Next up is this Mickey Mouse block. I basically made this one because I had noticed the fabric would work well and I wanted an excuse to make it. And fictional animals were explicitly allowed in the prompt details. Week 2 was mystery sections from the top half of an animal. I really struggled with this one. I played around with my templates on lots of fabrics to find one that would even work. Upcycled play food

Hello everybody! I have been spending a lot of time recently on a Facebook group called the Up-Cycled Cloth Collective . They are a movement dedicated to keeping textile waste out of landfill. There are thousands of inspiring people doing their best to dye, sew and embroider all sorts of fabrics. I really want to try and do more of that sort of thing myself. A lovely little human recently had her first birthday. Her talented mother made her a play kitchen for her birthday present out of recycled materials. So I thought she needed some upcycled play food to go with it. I made 5 little bits. Photos are posed on my own children's play kitchen, which is not recycled but has been well used. First up, I made a milk bottle. This is made out of an old T shirt, with cardboard from a cereal box inside to stiffen it. It is stuffed with fabric and batting scraps.
