#focuscuttingsewalong January 2021 roundup

Hello everyone! I am actually managing to keep on top of a sewalong so far this year! The #focuscuttingsewalong (previously known as the #fussycuttingsewalong), is a paper piecing sewalong organised by Naomi Clarke on Instagram. It is now in it's fourth year! I like this one because it's very informal and relaxed, people can join in as much or as little as they like. I have joined in with the previous three years. My ' Fussy Cutting Forest ' Quilt uses the hexagon flower blocks from the the first year (2018) and I am currently working on handquilting it. My ' Fussy In The Sky With Diamonds ' from the second year (2019) is still being pieced - I am adding borders to all the blocks, and I still have 3 or 4 blocks outstanding that I didn't manage to make in that year. Last year (2020) I decided to do one block a week, instead of one a month, and 2020 being the mess that it was I didn't manage to complete even the 12 blocks. I totally do intend to finish

Before the blog: Star Wars mini quilts

Hello everybody! Looking at cosplay stuff has me thinking about my fandoms a lot, and I realised I hadn't shared on here the Star Wars mini quilts I have made.  There are two of them, both from a swap called 'May The 4th Be With You' hosted by Jen @justjoshincreates on Instagram. The idea is you make a mini quilt and get it to your partner in time for Star Wars Day (4th May). A mystery person from the same swap group sends you one by the same date. I participated in this swap in 2017 and 2018. The one in 2017 was my first ever miniquilt swap. I chose it for two main reasons. The first is because Star Wars. The second is this swap allows a decent amount of making time - it starts at the end of January with posting the finished package in mid-late April, so you get around 10 weeks in which to make it. This is important to me, as I was making everything by hand at that point, and that's slow. It's normal for swaps to only run for about 3 weeks, which is fine if you ar

Review: The Cosplay Handbook by Grace Herbert

Hello everyone! As you probably know, I am a sci-fi/fantasy/gamer geek. Lately I have really been getting into the idea of trying cosplay. I am still very much at the inspiration/ideas gathering/planning stage of this. Why cosplay? Well it combines my geekiness with my sewing in a different way, and is a great way of creatively upcycling clothing. And dressing up is fun, even with nowhere to go. There are definitely things about it that will be a challenge to me, like make-up (I literally never wear any. I don't currently own any foundation. I might be able to dig out some lipstick from somewhere if I look hard), the fact I normally hate wearing hats, and my photography skills are somewhat lacking. But I think it will be fun to try anyway! So for my birthday last month, to help get me started, my hubby bought me this book.  It's a self-published title available on Amazon, written by Grace Herbert of gracewillowcrafts.com , formerly known as zonbiscosplay.com. I read it all pre
