2019 #fussycuttingsewalong February roundup

I may have gone a little overboard making starflowers this month.  I made 11. I found it tricky to get a good photograph of all of them, mostly because the kids kept running off with the blocks.

The sewalong only required us to make 4, 1 per week. But I just couldn't stop myself cutting out and sewing more than that. So this is going to be a long post.

The theme for February was lines.  We started the month with radiating lines. I made two that definitely met the prompt, and two more for fun. Here are the first two:

The top one is an experiment with a colour combination I wouldn't normally go for. And an excuse to use the cute lemur fabric by Rachida Colman-Hale. It got a lot of IG love but I still don't really like the grey flower fabric.
The rainbow one feels much more me. The fabric in the inner diamonds was a Festival of Quilts purchase last year. I love the star effect in the centre. The outer fabric I bought a while ago, and is great for fussy cutting effects. Here it is creating a frame in the centre of my Rainbow Hexies quilt.

I made the next two starflowers because I really wanted to fussy cut the monochrome fan fabric, and because seeing this one one by Wendy @kins_things made me remember I really wanted to use the perfectly-sized diamonds in the Tula Pink fabric. I wasn't sure if they met the radiating lines brief, but I ended up actually stitching them together in week 2, which was a freestyle love-themed week for Valentine's Day.

The green one got a 'wow' from my Dad. I am really happy with these two, they feel psychedelic, bright and cool.

I decided to do a more traditional love-themed starflower as well.

I won the fabric in the inner diamonds during last year's #fussycuttingsewalong. I really like the circle effect created by the words, it makes me think of a wreath. I was inspired to make this one after seeing two of my fellow participants using this fabric here and here. I used this fabric previously for a little hexie pincushion that I made as a Christmas present. Here are pics of both sides.

Next up, lines in the round.

Four in one week! And they are a bit of mixed bag. The first one I love - it's bright and sunshiny and the clouds seem to swirl around the centre.

The second one has great beach vibes, and I like the colour combination. The rays in the centre make a great star pattern. I love rays, I had a plastic bath toy of one when I was little. I love their little mouths. Here are some pictures of rays at Birmingham Sea Life Centre, just because I think they are so great.

The Winnie the Pooh starflower was a bit of a silly make, but the stripy background meant I could make it fit the prompt for.the week. It's the first one of these I have made that is all one fabric. It was a lot of fun.

And lastly, the monochrome spots and red zigzags. This was an experiment that didn't really work. I had hoped the dots would create an effect of lines forming concentric hexagon shapes, and that's not clear at all. So despite the zing of the high contrast and the red zigzags, this one falls flat for me.

And onto the final week of February - diagonal lines. I have made two this week. I am having to make myself stop there and make some other things, because this has got ridiculous.  Here they are:

The top one continues the monochrome with colour pops theme I seem to have going this month. The inner diamonds fabric is some of my favourite Libs Elliot scraps - they have diagonal lines and motifs of diamonds that sparkle when they catch the light. I didn't have enough to use a single colour, but I think the alternating pink and green work well.

And finally, another sunshine starflower, this time with a more pastel hue. I like the blue sprays in the outer diamonds.

And that's it! All 11!

This month, I have also been able to count them towards another sewalong. South Bay Bella is hosting a 'Sew for 15 minutes' sewalong this year, and February's theme is English Paper Piecing. I have been able to add the hashtag to all of these when posting them on IG. March is going to be about quilting. I think I am going to use that as a reason to make some progress on my Happy Scrappy Hexie Hearts quilt, which has been a bit neglected as a result of the Log Cabin swap and all these starflowers.
