Halloween La Passacaglia Progress

Hello everyone!

I am wondering if my lack of motivation for the fussy cutting sewalong in May (read here) is partly because I have had quite a bit of enthusiasm for my other projects. Some decisions about colours and a couple of fabric purchases mean I have been able to get on with my La Passacaglia quilt. Here's what I have done since my last blog post about this.

This large orange rosette has been expanded.


For this one, I stitched the stars as stars, instead of in a different order like I did with the large purple rosette. For that one I was emphasising different shapes and I found stitching the little triangles quite hard going. They are much more fun to stitch like this! Most of the stars in this quilt (and there are lots!) will be more like these ones, so I am looking forward to them much more than I was.

I have done some new rosette centres, and added diamonds to a couple more.








One has been expanded to have some of the pentagons as well. This one will join onto the large purple rosette when that has had some more added to it. They way they link together means it doesn't need the complete ring of pentagons. As I am constructing this there will be lots of rosettes with apparently missing pentagons and stars. It will make sense when it all comes together. 


The large purple rosette that the one above will join onto has had some more diamonds added. This is hard to photograph, because it is getting big and not lying flat, but you can see a couple of the new pieces in this picture. 


And finally, the second large purple rosette has had some work done. I am again trying to show up different shapes than the stars, so these triangles are not particularly fun to stitch, and that is making me procrastinate a bit about this rosette. But it will look good, so it's worth the effort.


I do like the shapes formed by the fussy cutting in this one, particularly the bats.

And that's where it currently stands. I feel like this one is plodding along nicely.

    I love the idea of a La Passacaglia quilt but don't have your patience for handwork. Fabulous!

    Perhaps there is only so much motivation to go around, and I can see why this project has captured yours. :) I love how your fussy cutting makes this such a special and individual project.

Finished! Sunflower Field Mini Quilt

Hello Everybody! I actually finished a quilt! Only a miniature quilt. But it's finished, nonetheless. This is Sunflower Field. This is my entry into the Near To Nature mini quilt challenge organised by The Little House of Patchwork  in aid of the RSPB . For the challenge we were all sent a pin badge of a British bird or countryside animal, and we had to make a mini quilt inspired by and including the pin. I was sent this little greenfinch. A bit of Googling and image searching revealed greenfinches to be fond of eating sunflower seeds. I had also seen som lovely EPP sunflowers by Anne at Three Goobers . I did some sketches and decided to do a little field with sunflowers in three different sizes to create an illusion of depth. The maximum size for the challenge was 9x12 inches, so it was clear from the outset I was going to need some very small sunflowers indeed. Finished Quilt: Hats Off To You

 Hello everybody! This is a story of a quilt that I have not only completely finished, but am exhibiting at the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham! This story starts on 25 March, when my Maths Professor Dad posted an article on FB about some as yet unpublished research into the discovery of a new shape given the name of 'einstein hat'. The is the first shape discovered by mathematicians that can aperiodically tile a plane all by itself. It was instantly obvious to me from the picture in the link that this could be made as an English Paper Piecing quilt. In particular, the small subdivisions of the shape marked out are kites - the exact same shape I was using for last year's #focuscuttingsewalong - and I still have a ton of the papers left over. So straight away I taped together 8 of them to make myself an einstein hat template. I spent the next two days making more paper templates and starting to baste them. Fussy cutting sewalong May roundup

Hello everyone! After all my enthusiasm in April, I seemed to have much less energy for this sewalong in May. I am not sure why. The theme of animals is a nice, concrete one to work with and I had been looking forward to it. However, even with the downturn in mood I still made 5 blocks in a 4-week month. Week one was whole animal motifs. This was an easy start - I had these fabrics picked out in my head as soon as the prompt details were up. The pairing of cats and milk appealed to my sense of humour. Next up is this Mickey Mouse block. I basically made this one because I had noticed the fabric would work well and I wanted an excuse to make it. And fictional animals were explicitly allowed in the prompt details. Week 2 was mystery sections from the top half of an animal. I really struggled with this one. I played around with my templates on lots of fabrics to find one that would even work.
