2019 #fussycuttingsewalong January roundup

The fussycuttingsewalong has kicked off with a bang this year! Lots of new people have joined us over on IG. It's good fun so far.

This year is all about diamonds. The January theme has been Living Coral, which is the Pantone Colour of the Year. I had far more coral fabric than I thought in my stash, which meant I could do more than one block in some weeks and experiment a little.

Here are all my January blocks.

As you can see there's enough for a hexie flower. I have a working idea for how to put these together into a quilt, but it makes a pretty massive quilt, so I am hoping my brain prunes it down to something more sensible over the next few months.

Week 1 was focussed on whole motifs in the inner diamonds. I did two blocks.

I love the coral trombones fabric it was so soft to work with. I think of this block as being like a fanfare, announcing the new shape.
The second block begged me to be made as soon as I put my template down on the fabric over the flower shape. I tried

Week 2 was inner diamond sections.

Inspired by a lobster fabric used by our host, Naomi Clarke, I used a little crab fabric and paired it with bright blue seashells. The seashells fabric was originally bought for making baby quilts for friends. I like the shapes these sections make.

Here's a quick pic of one of the baby quilts that featured the seashells fabric.

Week 3 was outer diamond motifs. I made three of these.

I bought the bee fabric about a month ago with exactly this usage in mind. I then decided to pair it with these trees, to make it look like they are flying into a woods to collect honey. I liked the challenge of creating a little scene with the block.

For the egg block, I used a different fussy cut from the same fabric as the Catherine Wheel block in week one. I was trying a different colour with the coral, as I felt I had done enough blue. I am not entirely satisfied with the combination, although I do feel like I did a good job sewing that one.

The shell block is one of my favourites. I liked alternating the colours in the outer diamonds and I love the shapes created by the lined fabric in the centre.

And finally, here's my week 4 block - this one focussed on sections in the outer diamonds.

This is a much more delicate pallet than I normally go for, but I do like it. I used the same bees as in week 3, but only their bums. It sort of looks like they are escaping the rose gold arrows. Those are metallic, by the way. I am a sucker for metallic fabrics.

So there we are, January is done! Honestly, I didn't think I would enjoy working with the coral colour, so I am happily surprised to have made so many blocks that I like.

Thanks for reading!

  1. Your fussy cutting is looking great, and it's a good move to incorporate some coral fabric too. Thank you for linking up to the Peacock Party.
