Tula Palooza To you with love block and Economy Block

Image
Hello Everybody! I seem to be in a pretty creative mood at the moment. And I decided to do some more on my other neglected sewalong, Tulapalooza. This is an Instagram sewalong using the fabrics of the peerless Tula Pink . Technically the sewalong finished at the end of 2019, and I was only doing a block a month instead of a whole quilt top a month, but I do want to finish off my 12 blocks so I can turn them into a quilt. I had managed faithfully until September, but things got away from me towards the end of last year, so I still had 3 blocks left to go. You can read about my previous blocks here; January , February , March , April , May , June , July , August , September . But I now have got through another two blocks, so I only have one outstanding. Here are the October and November blocks. October's block was using the To You with Love pattern, which is free on Stash Bandit's (Diane Harris) website .  It's a mini quilt pattern of little symmetrical hearts. Here's my...

Tulapalooza Dos Cuadrados/Heights and Depths Block

Image
Hello everyone! Well it's two weeks late, but I finally got my September Tula Palooza block finished. For this month we were using the Dos Cuadrados pattern by Jordan Fabrics. I couldn't work out how to translate the strip piecing from the pattern to a single block, so I cut it out as lots of little pieces. Here is my fabric pull. The meteor fabric was my part of my winnings from a Tulapalooza giveaway (mentioned here ). I don't think this sampler quilt would have felt right if I hadn't found a place to feature it. My original pull had just the black, white and pinm, but after staring at it for a few days (as mentioned on Insta here ) I decided that, oddly for Tula Pink fabric, the feature fabrics looked too washed out. So I added in the green to lessen the tone contrast between the pink and the other two. Unfortunately, I clearly wasn't thinking straight when I cut it out because I didn't cut enough strips of the pink. Which I discovered p...

Tulapalooza Hearts Crossed block

Image
Hello everybody! Just sneaking this in before the end of August, here is this month's block. It was a very simple quick one, using the free Heart Crossed pattern by In Color Order . As with all of these blocks, the pattern is for a whole quilt. To turn it into a block, I decided on a simple 9-patch, with four crosses. Here is my fabric pull. I was going for coherent, with a bit of a scrappy feel. I decided on just the one colour for the crosses (the pink) and attempted a purple-blue-green colour gradient from top to bottom with the background squares. It also gave me an excuse to cut into my newly-acquired piece of Pinkerville fabric and to fussy cut a Loch Ness Monster. I have been working quite slowly this month, as I have had the kids off school. The pattern itself came together quickly, but I worked in such small bursts that it took me over three weeks. It is easily doable in an evening, even working by hand like me. Here's a couple of in-progress shots. ...

Tula Palooza Holidays with our Homies block

Image
Hello everyone! My July Tula Palooza block is finished. For this month we were using Tula Pink's Holidays with our Homies patten, which is a free pattern available here . For me, the interest in the pattern lay in the little starts between blocks, that's what makes it more than just a Sawtooth star quilt. Also, I felt if I just did a star, it would feel too similar to the wonky star block we did in January . So I sketched out a way to include the sashing and quarter the little corner stars. Then on to the fabric pull. I started with the deer in the middle, mostly because it isthe only one of my large 'hero' prints I haven't used so far. It's from an out of print collection called Moonshine. As with previous months, my fabric choices are based more around colour than the design on the fabric. Each of these 5 fabrics is from a different Tula collection. This pattern came together very quickly, even stitching by hand. So much so that I forgo...

Tula Palooza Cobblestone/Weird Waters

Image
Hello everyone! My Tula Palooza block for June is finished. This month we are using the Cobblestone pattern, a free pattern from The Fat Quarter Shop available here . This pattern is pieced in strips, not blocks, so it wasn't instantly clear to me how to adapt it to a single block. After doing some maths, I decided to do a miniaturised version of the crib quilt pattern. This still meant I had space for some fussy cutting, so that's where I started for my fabric pull. I chose the fabrics mostly for their colours, but I like that they have a common theme of water. I am also really happy to have a red and green combo that doesn't scream Christmas. To make the most of the fussy cuts, I decided to rotate the design through 90 degrees. This pattern is easy to stitch, but does require some planning to get everything in the right place. So I did a quick sketch. And then on to cutting and sewing. I made a start, and realised I had cut a couple of the green Gi...

Works in Progress

Image
Hello everyone! I have been working in a very bitty way on everything recently. I have lots of different things on the go and I work on whichever takes my fancy at the time. I thought I would round up my progress on a few of my more active projects that I haven't been posting about so regularly. Tula Palooza June block This has hit a snag in that I cut some fabric pieces out too small and now I can't find the rest of it to cut some more. I have looked everywhere, it seems to have vanished off the face of the earth. Very annoying. Particularly as I really like how it's coming together. This will get a proper post when I find the fabric / cave in and buy some more. Fortunately, it's not an out-of-print fabric. Fussy cutting forest I last posted about this here  and here , but it has been progressing steadily since then. Here's how it looked in January when I took this pic as a layout guide: Here's how it looks now. I am well over ...
