My orphan block box

Image
My Mum gave me a bunch of odd blocks and unfinished bits of patchwork when I saw her a couple of days ago. These are things I made as samples, or because I had a bigger plan and then got distracted by other things. Some I don't remember at all and might have been originally pieced by one of my sisters. They live in a box above my sewing table, and very rarely see the light of day, so I thought I would give them a blog post of their own. A couple of fish blocks. I made these when I was about 17, I think they were samples for my Mum's monthly patchwork classes.  These are 'almost Amish' blocks. Amish quilting traditionally uses dark backgrounds and plain colours. I was calling these 'almost Amish' because I was using blenders rather than plains. I made them when I was living in Spain in 2003-2004. I originally intended them for a big bed sampler quilt, but I had a woefully inadequate amount of the black fabric and decided to focus on other thing

Working on WIPs

I have been doing lots of little bits of sewing this past week, just working on whatever takes my fancy at the time.  So I thought I would show you all the small amounts of progress I have made. WIPs are Works In Progress, which to be honest is the current state of most of my needlework. Kicking us off are two rosette centres for my La Passacaglia quilt. This is a part of a very large and complicated English Paper Piecing design. I am doing a Halloween theme. I just bought the black bat and moon fabric (from Tula Pink's De La Luna range) and I wanted to get stitching with it straight away. It's perfect for this sort of fussy cutting. I am making very slow progress on this quilt, partly because I haven't bought the blender fabrics I need to finish off the rosettes. I am hoping for it to be finished by Halloween 2020 but realistically it may well take longer than that. Next up, starting the 2019 #fussycutting sewalong. Decided to greet the new shape with a fanf

Tula Palooza Wonky Star

Hello everyone! I am joining in another IG sewalong. This one is called Tula Palooza. The idea is they give you a block design every month, and you are meant to make a quilt top using the block and fabrics by the designer Tula Pink. Now frankly there is no way on Earth I can complete a quilt top every month. I don't sew that fast and I don't have the time. So I am joining in in my own way - making one of each block (or more if I choose), and I will put them all together into a sampler type quilt at the end of the year. Here's my stash of Tula Pink fabrics. I got the Halloween ones (the De La Luna line) for my La Passacaglia quilt. I haven't blogged about that yet, but don't worry, I will soon! The fabrics are particularly good for fussy cutting and have a lovely bright colour pallate that allows you to mix and match between the different lines. Not that I normally worry about restricting myself to one designer or fabric collection in my work. The blo
