Valentine's Cushions

Hello everybody!

When I posted recently about my orphan block box, I came across this block and mused it could make a good Valentine's cushion.

I realised I had everything in my stash that I needed to do this, including a cushion insert. It only needed a one-inch border to fit the insert.

So, while watching the Great British Sewing Bee, I added the border and backing, and here it is! One finished appliqué heart cushion in time for Valentine's Day!

This is actually my second finish for the year. The first, which I also finished yesterday, was the mini quilt I made for the log cabin swap. I will post about that after it has been received by its intended recipient.

I thought this would be a good place to tell the tale of another Valentine's cushion.

It was 2004, and I was living up a Pyrenean mountain in Navarre, Spain. Which was very pretty, but isolated.

Me being me, I had still located my nearest Local Quilt Shop (next to the tourist information in Pamplona - a two-hour bus ride away). A lovely little place, with magazines in French. At the time I was much better at reading French than Spanish, so these were a comforting find. As a result, I had a basic complement of tools and a small stash with me.

Anyway, being broke, my best option for a Valentine's present for my then-fiancé now-husband - who was back at uni in Scotland - was to make one.

Here's my original sketch and planning.

As you can see, I originally planned to embroider our initials under the heart, but once I had it pieced, I decided that was overkill.

The whole thing was very much determined by the small mount of pink and red fabric I had. I had to piece a couple of bits to manage the red stripe on the back.

Obviously I didn't have any cushion inserts with me, let alone one for the random size I happened to make this cushion. So instead it's stuffed. Largely with batting scraps. But partly with old laddered tights. Oh yes, I know how to surprise my lover with underwear. Although, I am not sure I have ever actually mentioned that detail to him.

15 years on, I still have the same lovely man to make Valentine's cushions for so I must have done something right.

Incidentally, I still have very small scraps of the red heart fabric and they pop up in scrap projects, like in this hexie flower from last year's #fussycuttingsewalong. I think I only ever had a fat quarter of this fabric so it's done well.

Happy Valentine's, everybody! Thanks for reading.
