Marvel Book cushion

Image
Hello everybody! We have been celebrating the birthdays of my two little boys this month. They are both Lego and superhero mad (and Lego superheroes are the height of perfection for them). My eldest is currently particularly in love with Iron Man and the Avengers. I have been thinking about making book cushions (also known as reading pillows) for a little while, so when I came across this T shirt in a charity shop, I knew it would make a perfect start for a gift for my eldest. For various reasons, I ended up making it at the last minute the evening before his birthday. It only took me about an hour and a half. I decided to use the T shirt as the main cushion cover. I added some bits from my stash to make the front pocket. I machine quilted the panel simply along the white grid lines, and finished it off with some red bias binding from my stash along the top edge. Then, with the panel pinned carefully in place, I made up the cushion cover the same way I do normally ...

Finished! Happy Scrappy Hexie Hearts

Image
Hello everyone! I have my first finish of 2020! It's Happy Scrappy Hexie Hearts. This one was the subject of my first proper blog post! I told most of its story then, you can read it here . Since then, I have finished off the hand quilting and added the binding. The binding was the only thing I purchased for this project - everything else was already in my stash. It was not easy to decide what colour it should be bound in, given there is such a mix of colours in the piece. I went for 1 inch strips of a bright pink. And now it's finished! It has taken almost exactly two years from start to finish. I never did think up a snappier name, so Happy Scrappy Hexie Hearts it is. I am going to keep this one for myself, and hopefully hang it on my lounge wall once we finally get around to putting some picture hooks up. I took it out for a mini photo shoot in the park, so here are some shots from that. Thanks for reading!

Mosaic Contest: Evening Ember

Image
Hello everyone! Rachel at Stitched in Color is holding another mosaic contest. This time her chosen colour theme is 'Evening Ember' and she has invited us to make a mosaic with blue and orange fabrics pulled from the selection at Sojo Fabric . Here is my first one. I am calling it 'Earth and Sky' I have chosen Earth motifs, including hedgehogs and trees in the lower squares, and Sky motifs - birds and angels - in the upper ones. With a bright firy orange right in the middle. My second entry is called Sunset. Bright oranges and yellows fill the sky over a blue landscape. The way this works, Rachel looks at all the entries and draws up a shortlist. We then vote for our faves from the list and the winner gets a bundle of the fabrics in their mosaic. I quite like blue and orange together. Maybe I will win a bundle that will lrt me make this design I drew in 2018. It's created by alternating two traditional blocks - 54-40 or Fight and Churn Dash...
