2020 #focuscutting sewalong July and September blocks

Hello everyone!

I have been doing a photo challenge on Instagram, #myeppandme with Leela @the_makers_stash in which we share 8 of our English Paper Piecing projects. I pulled out my house blocks from last year's focuscuttingsewalong to photograph them for the challenge and realised I had done less than I thought. As I was still waiting on papers for my Halloween La Passacaglia quilt, I decided to make another couple of blocks for this. You can read more about what I am doing with this quilt here and here.

So for the July block, the theme was Lines.

Strong lines are something I have used already in a couple of previous blocks, as they are nice way to create an effect with the corner squares. I did want to make sure this block was different than those ones.

I found picking fabrics for this block pretty easy. I wanted something with a clear stripe and I wanted to put the lines 'in the round'. When I put my template over this black and white fabric, it was clear the flowers fit quite nicely into the house shape, so I was instantly sold.

For the outer squares, I instantly picked out this peach fabric. I cut the squares on the bias so they would appear to be moving diagonally towards the centre of the block.

And here's the finished block!

That went well, so I pulled some more fabrics and decided to do another block, for the September theme of 'Up above'

I realised I had this cute fabric with kites on it, that were the perfect size for the template.

Because that fabric is quite dark in tone,I paired it with an Aldi cloud fabric to lighten it a bit.

And here it is finished!

And I even got the house pieces sewn together for the October block, with the theme 'Look Down'. I am going all the way down under the sea with these fish.

I can't work out what to put in the corner squares, although it does look nice with the clouds, even if that doesn't work thematically.

So I now have 8.5 out of 12 blocks for this quilt, which is definitely an improvement on six.

My papers for the La Passacaglia have arrived, and my Mum just bought me a couple more bits of fabric I can use for it (thanks Mum!) so I will be getting back on with that again soon.

Thanks for reading!
