September 2023 #focuscuttingsewalong

 Hello everybody!

September is over in the #focuscuttingsewalong and I have actually managed to stay on track for this month! The theme was Green and I made 6 blocks in total


You can see I have joined an extra filler square onto one of the blocks, that's all apart of the plan to turn these into an actual quilt! Honeycombs don't tesselate by themselves so I am using squares as the extra shape. And, like in this photo, my layout allows for the blocks to be both 'multiplication signs' and 'addition signs' in their orientations so I can keep making blocks as the fabric suggests itself, especially when it comes to pattern matching.

So on to the individual blocks. Week 35 was identifiable motifs. I made 2 blocks.


First up the Hulk.




Gotta have the enormous green rage monster in green month. This is actually Hulk's second appearance this year, as he has also featured in July, but I haven't finished that month yet so it's not on this blog. You can go see it on my Instagram though.

Secondly, some seashells.


This is a Tula Pink fabric, from her Zuma collection.

Week 36 was obscure sections. I just made the one block for this week.


This didn't turn out quite as 'obscure' as I had hoped, though I do like the pinwheel shape created by the shapes. Here's the original fabric and the sections I used.






 
Did you guess? It was Buzz Lightyear and a green alien from Toy Story.

Week 37 was pattern matching. I made 2 blocks with this prompt.


First up, Tinkerbell.


My licensed fabric is getting a good airing this month! I have just matched the two pieces on the left-hand side here.

Secondly, these bears.



This fabric is a fairly recent Aldi purchase. And these bears were just the right size to fit across two pieces. I am very happy with my matching job on this one.

And finally Week 38 was Green Freestyle. I did one block.


Some little horses on this one. I originally bought this fabric to make hair scrunchies.

So that's September! There are several other green fabrics calling to me, but it's my most used colour of this year's sewalong and if I use any more I will have to make more of all the other colours to make the rainbow layout work so I will have to restrain myself in the interests of actually getting this finished at one point.

For October, Naomi has announced a freestyle month so those of us who want to do purple blocks to make up rainbows can (November will be Blue) without being obliged to. There will still be prompts, such as identifiable motifs, and there will be a one-week special for World Mental Health Day. So hopefully I can use this to catch back a lot of the gaps I've got. And, also hopefully, I will get caught up on the remaining three outstanding months soon.

Finished! Sunflower Field Mini Quilt

Hello Everybody! I actually finished a quilt! Only a miniature quilt. But it's finished, nonetheless. This is Sunflower Field. This is my entry into the Near To Nature mini quilt challenge organised by The Little House of Patchwork  in aid of the RSPB . For the challenge we were all sent a pin badge of a British bird or countryside animal, and we had to make a mini quilt inspired by and including the pin. I was sent this little greenfinch. A bit of Googling and image searching revealed greenfinches to be fond of eating sunflower seeds. I had also seen som lovely EPP sunflowers by Anne at Three Goobers . I did some sketches and decided to do a little field with sunflowers in three different sizes to create an illusion of depth. The maximum size for the challenge was 9x12 inches, so it was clear from the outset I was going to need some very small sunflowers indeed. Fussy cutting sewalong May roundup

Hello everyone! After all my enthusiasm in April, I seemed to have much less energy for this sewalong in May. I am not sure why. The theme of animals is a nice, concrete one to work with and I had been looking forward to it. However, even with the downturn in mood I still made 5 blocks in a 4-week month. Week one was whole animal motifs. This was an easy start - I had these fabrics picked out in my head as soon as the prompt details were up. The pairing of cats and milk appealed to my sense of humour. Next up is this Mickey Mouse block. I basically made this one because I had noticed the fabric would work well and I wanted an excuse to make it. And fictional animals were explicitly allowed in the prompt details. Week 2 was mystery sections from the top half of an animal. I really struggled with this one. I played around with my templates on lots of fabrics to find one that would even work. Finished Quilt: Hats Off To You

 Hello everybody! This is a story of a quilt that I have not only completely finished, but am exhibiting at the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham! This story starts on 25 March, when my Maths Professor Dad posted an article on FB about some as yet unpublished research into the discovery of a new shape given the name of 'einstein hat'. The is the first shape discovered by mathematicians that can aperiodically tile a plane all by itself. It was instantly obvious to me from the picture in the link that this could be made as an English Paper Piecing quilt. In particular, the small subdivisions of the shape marked out are kites - the exact same shape I was using for last year's #focuscuttingsewalong - and I still have a ton of the papers left over. So straight away I taped together 8 of them to make myself an einstein hat template. I spent the next two days making more paper templates and starting to baste them.
