Hello!

Welcome to Patches of Destruxion.

I have decided to keep this blog to make a record of my sewing projects. I mostly do patchwork and embroidery. I am active on IG under the name @eveofdestruxion, and while I love the IG crafting community, I want a place for keeping more coherent records, telling stories about the pieces I create and posting different captions for multiple images. It would also be nice to write the stories of some things I created many years ago.

I am doing this mainly for myself. I hope to post fairly regularly - about once a week - but I make no guarantees of doing so.

So, who am I? I am Genevieve, I am a former educational publishing professional, now embracing full-time parenthood to my little ones, currently aged 4, 2 and 1. I have been sewing and crafting since I was a small child. I slowed down considerably in my 20s but decided to start properly dedicating time and space to my crafting about half way through my second maternity leave. I am mostly taught by my awesomely talented and productive mum, Theresa.

I sometimes follow patterns and make kits, especially for cross stitch and embroidery, but mostly I just sketch and sew. I have many more ideas and plans than I have actual finished projects.

I am not a fast maker.  My crafting time is precious to me, and I generally prefer to stitch whatever has gripped me in the moment, rather than insisting to myself I have to finish one thing before I can start another. Also, I prefer to work by hand. I am slightly scared of my sewing machine and tend to avoid using it if I don't have to. Hoping to conquer that fear soon!

So here is my blog!  So you have something pretty to look at, here is a recent finish - three little autumn woodland animals from a kit by Susan Penny from Cross Stitcher magazine.


I enjoyed stitching these, they took longer than I expected, but I liked the way they used different weights of stitching for the backgrounds to help the illusion of depth.

Finished! Sunflower Field Mini Quilt

Hello Everybody! I actually finished a quilt! Only a miniature quilt. But it's finished, nonetheless. This is Sunflower Field. This is my entry into the Near To Nature mini quilt challenge organised by The Little House of Patchwork  in aid of the RSPB . For the challenge we were all sent a pin badge of a British bird or countryside animal, and we had to make a mini quilt inspired by and including the pin. I was sent this little greenfinch. A bit of Googling and image searching revealed greenfinches to be fond of eating sunflower seeds. I had also seen som lovely EPP sunflowers by Anne at Three Goobers . I did some sketches and decided to do a little field with sunflowers in three different sizes to create an illusion of depth. The maximum size for the challenge was 9x12 inches, so it was clear from the outset I was going to need some very small sunflowers indeed. Finished Quilt: Hats Off To You

 Hello everybody! This is a story of a quilt that I have not only completely finished, but am exhibiting at the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham! This story starts on 25 March, when my Maths Professor Dad posted an article on FB about some as yet unpublished research into the discovery of a new shape given the name of 'einstein hat'. The is the first shape discovered by mathematicians that can aperiodically tile a plane all by itself. It was instantly obvious to me from the picture in the link that this could be made as an English Paper Piecing quilt. In particular, the small subdivisions of the shape marked out are kites - the exact same shape I was using for last year's #focuscuttingsewalong - and I still have a ton of the papers left over. So straight away I taped together 8 of them to make myself an einstein hat template. I spent the next two days making more paper templates and starting to baste them. The 3rd Genevieve Awards: The Festival of Quilts 2023

 Hello everybody! The Festival of Quilts 2023 has been and gone and it has been one hell of an event! I spent two whole days there, I exhibited myself for the first time this year, I attended two workshops and a talk and I took a grand total of 1619 photos, which I have had to dump onto my laptop because my SD card and my phone storage have finally told me enough is enough with my photo habits and I near to clear some space. Me on the train on the way to the second day of the FOQ. So on to this year's Genevieve Awards! The Genevieve Awards are awards I give to the quilts on display at the Festival of Quilts. The only prize for them is the knowledge that I like your quilt. I make up the categories, I decide which quilts go in to the categories, I decide who wins. These are now the third Awards (you can also read the ones for 2022 and 2019) and the categories change depending on what quilts are at the show.  For the first year ever, I have decided that some quilts at the show are not
